Suiting & Clubbing

Today was the first time ever that I’ve worn a suit. A damn suit! And then I even went clubbing. In a nightclub! Both of these would have been unimaginable for me, but alas, I did both ?

So as the (lunar) year is closing, we threw a small year-end party for the staff. The dress code is ‘nice and formal’. Phong and I suddenly realised we had no decent looking outfit at all, and so this would be the perfect occasion to splurge on some nice sets of suits.

Now the problem is that neither of us have any sense of fashion. Zero. I have a couple of T-shirts, two pairs of jeans, some random collared shirts, and that’s it. I’m blind when it comes to fashion.

So we looked for what to buy. We drew inspiration from looking at “gay couples” albums. Now that sounds funny, but seriously, we are two guys looking for matching outfits, and gay guys are known for their (fabulous) sense of fashion.

We finally decided to go with contrasting suits. We went to a men’s clothing store on Chùa Bộc and bought the whole outfit. And here’s the final result:

I’m seriously wearing a white suit here

I’m still not sure why I picked that burgundy & white mix. We either look like a pair of cartoon crime bosses or two gay dudes just happily married (the hand holding is accidental).

I’m not too happy with how well my suit fits. Somehow Phong’s fits tightly while mine is pretty loose. I’ll get it fixed soon.

The party was really fun. It was surreal thinking that 2.5 years ago it was just me and Phong doing everything, and now we have this entire group of people working together. Almost 30 men and women. We rented a 20-pax room which ended up being a bit small for everyone.

Well, either way it’s the first time I’m ever having a suit on. Good memories. It’s a nice breath of fresh air from the regular messy look I’m always sporting.

Clubbing

After the year-end party, we headed to a nightclub. That’s a first time for me as well.

Now I already know I’m not the clubbing type of person. I’ve never understood why people enjoy that noisy and chaotic experience inside a nightclub.

After this night, it becomes even clearer that the clubbing scene is just not for me. It’s too. Damn. Loud. Constant electronic and dance beats blasting through these massive speakers. It seems like the DJ just had a YouTube “club playlist” on, because I swear there were no breaks or anything. Just incessant big beats.

There are people around drinking heavily and smoking these laugh balloons? Lots of people dancing and screaming at the top of their lungs. They seem to be having fun. That’s great for them, but I just feel so awkward that we were just huddling around this tiny table drinking and dancing in one spot. Not even dancing — everyone was just doing mini-lunges to the left and to the right.

I tried to let loose and be immersed in the scene, but it was so awkward for me. I was kind of bored just standing amidst all these beats and disco lights, I was thinking about arm wrestling the entire time ? I’d be so happy if I could find someone to arm wrestle right then and there.

I think you’d have to drink more alcohol or have some sort of illicit substances to really facilitate the whole immersion experience. Or at the very least you should know how to dance? I cannot dance to save my life, and I drank very modestly — I never liked the idea of losing control of my body anyway. So I guess I just haven’t reached that stage where I could truly enjoy the club scene.

We left after about one hour. The final bill was… well, let’s say more than I expected. I know clubbing isn’t cheap. But the way I see it, there are way more quality entertainment options for much cheaper. Like arm wrestling!! Just kidding of course.

A 2020 of Many First-Times

That’s about it. I’m just hoping 2020 will be filled with new memories.
